The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Ministry of Power (MoP), Government of India conceived an innovative program aimed at accelerating the pace of reform in India 's electricity distribution sector with a special focus on improving the nation's rural energy supply situation.
The goal of the Distribution Reform, Upgrades and Management (DRUM) Project is to improve the quality of electricity services in India . While it will focus on the entire distribution sector, DRUM views rural electrification as key to a sustainable solution for India 's electricity supply problems.
USAID has organized a team with unique mix of specialized skills and experience to implement DRUM. A core focus area calls for the development of a rural electrification strategy based on the successful experience in the US . A team from the US Rural Utilities Service (RUS) will join with India 's Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) to advise on this and related matters.
